8x vs 10x vs 12x
I've written a review about the last iteration of these binoculars and I won't repeat it here. Briefly, these are the best binoculars you can get without spending big bucks, and I think they are the cheapest binoculars you should even consider buying (while there might be an exception to this, cheaper binoculars are bad enough to be worthless and a complete waste of money). These binoculars are three times as good as what you can get for $100 and 90% as good as what you can get for $2,000. They are better than most similarly priced binoculars, and better than many much more expensive binoculars.Since this is one of the most common binoculars bought by beginners (for good reason), I thought it would be helpful to have a breakdown of the uses of the different magnifications as many buyers have probably not used binoculars extensively. I am mostly into birding and wildlife watching, so beware of that bias if your needs are different.Don't know what size binoculars...

Great birding and bugging bins
These binoculars are mostly just like the old Nikon Monarchs, with maybe just a little more light in low light conditions. An excellent pair of binoculars for the price, five years ago binoculars of this quality would have been more like $500-600. An especially cool feature of all the Nikon Monarchs is the close focus distance, which with my eyes is probably even a little under four feet. If you like looking at butterflies and dragonflies as well as birds, these binoculars are an excellent choice for their price tag.

Monarch 8x42 Binocular
I purchased these based on the performance review from Cornell. I am thouroughly pleased and actually purchased a second pair for my wife. The low light performance of these was more than adequate for our birding needs in early morning or late evening. The brightness is astonishing compared to a binocular of lesser quality. I will never go back to a cheap bino. These have helped tremendously bringing our birding experience to the next level. They offer a superb level of contrast and sharpness required for bird identification. I can easily see markings on a sparrow at 50 feet or more in low light. The eye relief is great and having retractable eyecups even works well with eyeglasses. These binos are mean to be used heavily, just about bulletproof in most conditions. I would advise people to change out the neckstrap with a harness. My neck never hurts and they don't swing with a harness, the Leupold is excellent. If you are a birder and want to make a good...

Monarch 3 vs Monarch ATB
I just ordered these binoculars and haven't received them yet (update below), but wanted to point out something from my research. After many hours of reading many reviews in various places, I decided to get the Nikon Monarch ATB 8 x 42 (best bang for your buck and years of satisfied customers). I noticed that Amazon had the Monarch ATBs with many reviews and these Monarch 3s with only 3 reviews. They have identical prices and the specs are virtually identical, but the Monarch 3s have a longer eye relief (which is good for all, but especially for those with glasses).I looked up the Monarch 3s and there's not much info out there. They are new, and the most info I found was on the Nikon website (nikon hunting). It seemed that the Monarch 3s are the latest and greatest from Nikon, but it's hard to tell for sure. Nikon BRINGS it
This was a first time binocular purchase...so I am by no means an "expert reviewer" What I AM is 100% satisfied with the purchase of the 10 X 42 monarch 3. I did my due diligence, about three weeks of net research and hands on at sporting goods stores. Monarch 3 ATB Still Best Bang For Buck
I am not an optics "expert" by any means, but I do spend well over a month in the field hunting every year. I got some new binoculars this year, the new Nikon Monarch 3 ATB 10x42's. For the past four years I have been using the original Nikon Monarch ATB 10x42's. I kept my old Monarch ATB's and did some side by side comparisons. I have to say I am impressed. The Monarch ATB's have long been the best selling binoculars in their price range for a reason. Nikon has managed to make them even better, while keeping them at the same price, about $250. The Monarch 3's are slightly larger, a bit heavier (by only 3 oz.), and the body has an even better rubber coating. They "feel good" in my hands and are very easy to focus. They are fog proof and water proof like the original ATB's. The eye-cups on the "3's" have click settings now and allow for even greater eye relief. This is important for folks like me that wear glasses. My favorite new feature on the "3's" though, are the silver-alloy...

Performance at a reasonable price
I really like these binoculars. They are light, bright, work well with eyeglasses and I give five stars because they are excellent value. I bought these binoculars for a nature trip in the Amazon and I use them in the back yard, on hikes and occasionally at the symphony or opera. My sister, an ornithologist, told me to get the most expensive binoculars I could afford. To her binoculars are a professional tool but I really didn't want to afford a thousand bucks like she was suggesting. She also told me to try out binoculars in dim conditions and to get 8x42 rather than 10x42 because it is easier to find what you are looking for and easier to hold so that the view is not shaking.In the store I compared these with the same power Leica. The Leica was nice but a lot heavier. I could tell the Leica was better, but not three times the price better. It was dusk, overcast and drizzling (ideal conditions for trying out binoculars). Tack sharp, lightweight and well worth owning.
I did alot of research before deciding on this pair. As an experienced photographer, optical quality was my top priority.I originally purchased them for hiking and long range mountain scanning in southern Oregon, and while initially perplexed between the 10X or 8X version; I found the extra sharpness of the 8X resolution negated the need for a 10X magnification, because they rendered so much detail.With the 8X, I spotted a fire lookout station that I'd never seen before, on a mountain 15 miles out of town. Quite remarkable. Added to that, was the research at Cornell University's Ornithology Center on the web. Birdwatchers extraordinaire; who called them a steal. I concur. I never thought I'd be so happy paying this price for binoculars, but it was a no brainer. Tack sharp, lightweight and well worth owning.

Bargain of the century?
Bought these bins recently, they really are excellent, very easy to use, good feel, amazing light gathering and reproduction, and only 1 and 1/2 pounds. If you read Cornell Lab of Ornithology review, there is only 1 set of binoculars under 1000 dollars that beat these,(and they are 6x lenses not really suitable for general birding.)Everything about them feels and works like 1000 dollar lenses with two exceptions, the lens cap and raingaurd, the former in particular would be a disgrace on 50 dollar lenses, i am going to see if i can buy generic replacements. Lots of other web reviews also rave about them, and 98% of people would not tell the difference between these and top range Zeiss, Leica etc. And for 300 dollars you can take them anywhere and enjoy them.

Does what it's supposed to do
I mounted this scope on a sporterized M1917 (a.k.a. Enfield) .30-06. At sight-in (and first time ever handling this rifle) I was same-hole at 50 yards immediately, and had nice groups at 100 in no time. The view through the scope was clear and bright, with sharp reticle. Eye relief is very nice. I have no doubt that with a little more trigger time I'll have tight groups at 200 yards as well, and feel confident taking this rifle and scope on my hunt this fall.

2010 April(ish) - This was the second product purchased as "new" inside a month which was obviously handled although do not think it was mounted. It had surface dust on the scope and the box was worn as if it was a demo. But all that was not the primary issue ... the eye lens had a 1-2mm diameter piece of coating missing near at the center of the eye optic and there was dust inside the scope seen through the eye ocular. Although the scope was very disappointing (returned) I found Amazon to be awesome by paying for return shipping with a fast refund. So I do not hold Amazon accountable for this ... I do hold the company that supplied Amazon with this products unacceptable condition.2010 October 27 - Update. So I waited several months and concluded that the best price is still from Amazon. Once again Amazon has been great delivered ahead of time and in prefect condition. I priced this scope at many different places online and local the price could not be beat and with no taxes or shipping it made it a great deal. As for the scope nikon makes a great scope and for the price it can't be beat. I now have 3 of these scopes one mounted on a rem 700 300 win mag, also on a rem 700 22-250 and on a rem 770 30-06 they all work great super clear and with Nikon onspot program makes long shots really easy to figure out. Don't think you can find a better scope for the price or a better place to buy it than Amazon.

Love it!! It is a fantastic scope. The BDC works well too! Dead on!!I considered purchasing a Vortex or Leupold of comparable glass and features. However, this one seemed to be brighter and slightly crisper and clearer in the store. It certainly beat the price for a compatible Leupold.Way cheaper here than at Cabela's, Bass Pro, or your local retail store too!!

Very Satisfied!
After reading all the reviews I decided to purchase the rifle scope. I was not dissapointed! It came early, thanks Amazon, and it was brand new in a box. Mounted it and took it to my range to sight in...right on the mark! Within 8 shots I was centered from 100yds out. The scope was crisp and clear and the target felt like it was right in front of me.Took my it to my hunting camp and it did NOT fog over. As the sun began to set and I could barely makeout the landscape with my eye, but through the Monarch it was super clear...it let in so much light I was really surprised how well it operated in the field.Great scope!
