Seen on PBS, 3/20/11
I saw this on the PBS channel last night, 3/20/11, as part of the channel's fund raising efforts, and it was excellent! The footage of the games, the interviews with key players as well as fans like Ron Howard, were very well done and gave you an insight into the by-gone days of America's favorite pastime. An interesting account of how Jewish players were perceived in those days, something I was not aware of, and how they kept their dignity throughout it all. A touching story of how Hank Greenberg befriended Jackie Robinson and encouraged him to dismiss jeers from the crowd and stay in the game... Jackie Robinson called Hank a class act. Nice to see a NEW documentary on baseball. I was very impressed.

Totally Absorbing ....for Anyone... A Beautiful American Story.
I am neither a great baseball fan nor am I an observant Jew. However, Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story is so well told, so equisitely well put together....and so beautifully narrated by Dustin Hoffman that it had me wondering where the time went. Amy Linton's brilliant editing , the choices of images ( how did they find these ? ) and music compliments the absorbingly paced stories and interviews . The Result: A thoroughly enjoyable visual and auditory treat..... reinforcing the very best of the American Dream.

Swinging For The Fences--History, Religion And Rounding The Bases
While the film "Jews and Baseball" would, at first glance, seem to target a very specific demographic--it has surprisingly widespread appeal. This entertaining sports documentary charts the progression of Jewish baseball players through the decades and it's clear that the filmmakers have a true love of the game! Assembling sports figures, their heirs and relatives, historians, Jewish authorities, and celebrity fans (Ron Howard, Larry King)--the film has a pleasing sense of completeness in showcasing how vital the national pastime was in integrating the Jewish culture into mainstream America. Fighting prejudice and ignorance, early Jewish stars of the game helped pave the way for future trailblazers such as Jackie Robinson. Today, players are not defined by these cultural and religious signifiers, they are judged on how well they field the ball--and that's certainly a move in the right direction. The film is structured along a chronological timeline and features just...

Product Description

Fine family western stars Jimmy Stewart as a cowboy accompanying heiress Maureen O'Hara and daughter Juliet Mills on a journey across the frontier to deliver a prize bull. Action, comedy and romance; co-stars Brian Keith, Jack Elam, Ben Johnson. 97 min. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital mono, French Dolby Digital mono; Subtitles: Spanish, French; theatrical trailer. Top to learn more

A very offbeat subject gives this Western its beefy flavor: English lady Maureen O'Hara brings a prize Hereford bull to the Wild West, where she plans to introduce its hardy bloodline into longhorn country. Cattle puncher James Stewart finds the idea suspect, but he likes this redhead, so he manages to tag along through stampede, gunfight, and blizzard. Director Andrew V. McLaglen generally steers a pleasing course, although the movie occasionally stumbles between brawling comedy and western drama. One stunt sequence, a run of longhorns through a desert canyon, qualifies as a hair-raiser. Brian Keith, wearing a gigantic red beard, does a Scots accent as a cattle baron, and veteran cowhands Ben Johnson and Jack Elam are around to lend atmosphere. The big bull's name is Vindicator, and he obeys whenever Juliet Mills whistles "God Save the Queen"--did we mention this is a very offbeat subject for a Western? --Robert Horton Top to learn more

A Western which misses fire by not coming down firmly as either drama or comedy...
Under the direction of Andrew V. McLaglen, who understood the John Ford mystique, "The Rare Breed" is a Western of consummate integrity which misses fire by not coming down firmly as either drama or comedy; it does however pass the time amiably enough...Stewart again plays a cynical, hard-bitten man who has become disillusioned with human nature... But his insight and understanding are well transmitted...The title refers to a certain breed of cattle, and not to men, rare, courageous, or other-wise...O'Hara is an Englishwoman who comes to America with her daughter, Juliet Mills, bringing a prize Hereford bull named Vindicator... Her husband has died on the way, and she is delivering the bull to a cattle baron (Brian Keith) in Dodge City... Her late husband has always declared that the Hereford could be successfully interbred with the indigenous American Longhorns...Originally Stewart had planned to kidnap the bull and hand it over to a...

Fair but not Good
This film has some first rate talent. Jimmy Stewart and Maureen O'Hara are first rate stars and they made first rate westerns but this is not one of them. It is merely passable.Maureen O'Hara plays a British widow whose husband was a cattle breeder in Herefordshire. They have brought their prize Hereford bull to the American west in an effort to both make money and improve the wild longhorn cattle being raised in the American west. The two women are about the only ones who have faith in the breed. Everyone else seems to think they cannot survive the harsh conditions in America.Jimmy Stewart plays a cowboy hired to get the bull to its purchaser. He is also hired to steal the bull for someone else. When he is unexpectedly accompanied by women his plans go awry because they are very strong willed and because he is beginning to fall in love with Maureen. In time, even the women lose faith in the bull but Jimmy Stewart does have faith. Good triumphs over...

Best series in the history of television
(Updated) Series on a whole: 5 stars++. Stories on this particular set: 4-1/2 stars. Video quality: 3-1/2 stars. Extras: 4 stars. Why would I call this the "Best series in the history of television"? ...because it's BIG in heart and soul, the characters and stories have TREMENDOUS depth, and it's not bogged down by the politics of your typical western, or typical show for that matter. The storylines could go anywhere, and focus on anyone, or anything. There didn't have to be a villain of the week, a murder, etc. Come to think of it, this is one of the most "murder-less" westerns I have ever seen. If people died, it was more from life's hardships in the 1800's than from anything else. It may not have ended anywhere near as well as it came in, but when you look back at the series on a whole, I would still rank this as being the best of all TV series, and for a number of reasons. The appeal of this series is much broader than most people give it credit for...

This would make a great Christmas gift!
I am so happy that these TV movies of "Little House On The Prairie" have found a new home on DVD. These are such beautiful and heart-warming movies. I have seen them many times on TBS as a child growing up. But I do not believe they have been shown on TV Land or The Hallmark Channel, making these tales very rare in recent years. This DVD is coming out at the perfect time because it would make a great Christmas gift or stocking stuffer. These are the TV movies included on the "Little House On The Prairie - Special Edition Movie Boxed Set:"Look Back To Yesterday (original air date: December 12, 1983)Charles comes home from the big city to Walnut Grove to try to get the farmers to share their crops. He brings his oldest son, Albert. While in Walnut Grove Albert displays mysterious medical symptoms. Charles brings Albert to a specialist and finds out that he has a serious disease. This is actually a very sad episode, so be warned. Some say that Albert died in...

Product Description

Although the beloved family drama, Little House on the Prairie, ran its course in March 1983, there were three addition movies made due to popular demand.

Look Back at Yesterday (Dec 1983)  Charles Ingalls returns to Walnut Grove.  During his stay, he learns that Albert, a doctor in training, has contracted a blood disease that is nearly always fatal.  Also, an  economic recession that threatens to destroy the community.

Bless All the Dear Children (Dec 1984)  Rose, Laura and Almanzo's infant daughter, is kidnapped during Christmas.  The family discovers that she was stolen by a woman who was longing to have a child of her own.

The Last Farewell (Feb 1984)  This final adventure finds Walnut Grove being purchased by an evil miner.  Rather than being thrown off their land, the townsfolk exact a more spectacular method of leaving their beloved town.

One Good, and Two Great "Movies" Makes This Set a Treasure
This boxed set includes two of my all-time favorite Little House films. There's a big reason why the final season of Little House just didn't have the same feel as the all of the ones before it. Even though the series was about Laura Ingalls Wilder, the true pivotal character has always been Charles. Michael Landon created one of the most memorable characters in television history. When he left the show during the final season, it was like a hole was left behind and unable to be filled. Little House simply wasn't the same.Thankfully, however, Michael Landon reprises his role in two of these final movies that ended the series so wonderfully. The first film, "Bless All the Dear Children," is okay at best. It is not a great installment. While the premise is good, (Rose is kidnapped by an emotionally disturbed woman while Laura and Almanzo are Christmas shopping), it simply isn't carried off well. This is supposed to be December in Minnesota, and yet...

Rare Tv Movies On Dvd

To say this movie does not deserve a DVD release because it was a TV movie is to overlook all of the other made for TV movies that did. In order to get this one made, the producers sold the rights of this movie to a lot of companies, and each one has a legitimate claim to it. For an official DVD release to happen, the rights holders will need to agree or someone needs to buy out... It is kind of odd considering that other, less deserving TV movies have gotten DVD releases. The cited reason is because of the flop nature of the movie, even though other monumental flops were released on DVD. The reason for this movie not getting a DVD release is simply that it’s been forgotten by a lot of people. This movie is not on DVD in the United States because it is considered an embarrassment to the actors, the filmmakers, and the studio. This documentary is not on DVD because the current Apple Corps president is actively preventing the release of it. He claims that it would tarnish the image of the Beatles if this documentary were ever shown again.   If you want, you can get an import copy of the movie from Europe, but do not look for a domestic version of this movie. A made for TV movie from 1990, Matters of the Heart is a story of following one’s dream over family responsibility. There was a VHS release in 1997 and that was the last time this movie made it onto home formats. It does get played from time to time on the pay movie channels like Cinemax and HBO.

Truer aspects of the saga and fictional variations of the Titanic have appeared many times in film and TV movies, including the German In Nacht und Eis (1912), the Danish Atlantis (1913), the multi-lingual sound release Atlantic (1929), the Nazi... Possibly made for European TV distribution, the transfer is otherwise quite clean, though the print lacks natural skin tones and the kind of clarity DVD viewers have enjoyed with older film releases. Carlton’s Region 2 DVD includes the film’s trailer, in its original 2. Among the numerous documentaries about the wreck of the Titanic, the most notable include National Geographic’s Secrets of the Titanic (1986), the original 107 minute IMAX film Titanica (1995), and James Cameron’s 3D IMAX epic Ghosts of the Abyss... “Raise the Titanic” was previously available in full screen NTSC laserdisc versions (and an old RCA CED edition, via Fox), so this British disc is a step up for Titanic fans. Barry’s score was re-recorded for CD because of the complete disappearance of original audio stems, and one wonders what on earth the former theatrical wing of ITC has done with original prints used for the “Raise the Titanic” theatrical engagements.
